Whether you are a newcomer to the music industry or have some experience, the Basic DJ Program puts you on the right path to successful mixing and gives you the confidence to take your passion and skill further!
What does the program cover?
- Introduction to one’s role and understanding of a DJ
- Familiarization with DJ equipment: setting up, switching on and switching off
- An explanation of how the equipment works
- Understanding the role and responsibilities of a DJ
- Terminology used among DJs in the industry
- Understanding different music styles
- Conceptualizing how music is made and how it should be played
- Beat matching
- Blending and fading with a mixer
- Correct EQing when mixing
- Working with headphones and cueing tips
- How to record your first professional DJ mix
- GRADUATION: Perform a 30 minute live mix for Retro Music staff, your friends and family
How lessons work:
- 12 lessons, one hour each
- Get exclusive attention with one-on-one training!
- We record your mixing in every lesson in order to track your progress throughout the program
- Retro Music offers the most flexible lesson times, which can be booked anytime during our trading hours: 10am to 6pm
weekdays, 10am to 2pm Saturdays (subject to availability).
The Basic DJ program is structured to ensure students get the best possible results from what they learn. We aim to help students acquire the skills they need to generate interest from the music industry and be taken seriously as a professional DJ.

Add-ons for this program
Practice is very important for successful learning. If you don’t have DJ equipment or intend buying soon, we recommend you use some extra sessions to practice and ensure a successful graduation. This will also help guide you in making the right
decision when choosing your own equipment to buy.
- 5 practice sessions of 1 hour each: R500
- 10 practice sessions of 1 hour each: R1000
- 15 practice sessions of 1 hour each: R1500
There are payment options available when taking the add-ons for this program. These are discussed upon application for the
program.
